Charts Don't Lie: August 20th

Weekly review of the top sales on the Hip Hop and R&B charts. 2 Chainz results are still being tallied, but with the rumor mill running wild it seems he will top Billboard next week with 140,000 albums sold. Thus, with Based on a T.R.U. Story in lieu, this week’s charts appear very similar to those of the week before: 1.) Rick Ross – God Forgives, I Don’t: Rozay holds onto the top spot for a second week in a row. Having sold 55,781 records his numbers are down 74% from last week. In addition, he fell into the second slot on the Top 200 with the debut of Now 43 taking first. That said this is far from bad news for the Boss as MMG still has a lot in store. 2.) Elle Varner – Perfectly Impatient: There may be those that are unaware of this RCA recording artist, so perhaps it’s time to take a look. With 31,228 records out the gate, Varner entered the R&B/Hip Hop charts ahead of her more established counterparts. For those interested in the artist check out her duet with J. Cole, or download her free mixtape Conversational Lush. 3.) Nas – Life is Good: Nas draws closer to the quarter million mark as another 17,444 albums are added to his total. While the rappers who write continue to return to the limelight, it’s nice to see the king of this craft doing so well. 4.) Frank Ocean – Channel Orange: In only a month, Frank is halfway to going Gold. He moved another 14,085 units this past week, and has done so with no singles on the Top 10. 5.) Chris Brown – Fortune: Breezy’s album count increased by 11,601, just enough to keep him in the top five. Unfortunately all this money making has kept him entrenched in controversy. In streaming news Wale & Kendrick Lamar garnered exposure with “Don’t Hold Your Applause” and “Swimming Pools (Drank)” respectively. However, Flo Rida remains the most streamed rap artist of the summer. Speaking of the summer, it’s interesting to note that Nicki Minaj & Usher both have songs standing strong on the season’s chart. Nicki’s “Starships” sits atop Usher’s “Scream” at this point, and with fall soon underway it seems that’s how it’ll stay. Lastly, record setter Drake added two more supporting singles to the charts this past week. Aaliyah’s “Enough Said” debuted at #87, and Rick Ross’ “Diced Pineapples” entered at #98. All in all it was a slow week, but with a slew of big records about to release all of that will soon change.
