Death smash in £500k supercar

Millionaire killed as his Pagani Zonda hits fence
A MILLIONAIRE property developer was killed after his £500,000 dream car ploughed into a fence. William Baranos, 52, was thrown ten feet clear of the 215mph Pagani Zonda by the huge impact. He was taking the Italian supercar for a spin with a pal’s son, believed to be in his 20s, who walked away unhurt. The 7.1-litre Zonda — which accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds — hit the fence and a post at a builders’ yard. Dad-of-one Mr Baranos was pronounced dead at the scene in Watford, Herts. Witnesses claimed he was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident happened on Sunday. Peter Pond, 70, said: “The car was upright but the driver was down the road. He came out with the door and things because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Crash scene ... broken fence at debris-strewn builders' site “The passenger sat in the car for a while. He was wearing a seatbelt. When we saw petrol leaking my grandson unbuckled him and got him out.” Manik Bahavani, 74, added: “I heard a car driving at speed and then the accident. The car was a complete wreck.” Mr Baranos, born William MacKenzie, spent a lot of time in Brazil where he was building a hotel. Shelly Epstein, 53, who knew him through friends, said: “William was the happiest guy ever, really nice. He was very vibrant.” Pals said his Serbian-born wife Mirjana, 36, was “devastated”. Dream car ... a 215mph Pagani Zonda The couple, who had a young daughter, lived in a £3million four-storey apartment in Aldenham, Herts. Their home appeared in a property feature last year after they put it up for sale. Mrs Baranos said: “We need somewhere bigger because we entertain a lot and often have 30 cars turning up.” Her husband’s Zonda was one of just 206 made. The cars are adored by Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond. A neighbour said Mr Baranos had only just bought the car. She said: “I’ve seen it a lot in the last fortnight but I hadn’t before then.” Last night a Herts Police spokesman said: “The cause of the crash is under investigation.”
