Nicole Kidman, Judy Davis vie for Emmy awards

IT'S television's night of nights. As the biggest stars in the world prepare to walk the red carpet at the Emmys, which air here tomorrow morning, two Australians are up for gongs. Our chances of taking home a trophy rests with veteran actresses Nicole Kidman and Judy Davis, Kidman for best actress in a mini series or movie and Davis for best supporting actress in the same category. Kidman's nomination is for her role as Hemingway's journalist wife Martha Gellhorn in the television movie Hemingway & Gellhorn. Scoring her 11th Emmy nomination, three-time winner Judy is in the running for Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her part in spy film Page Eight. This year the competition promises to be tougher than ever. Many of the nominees are repeat success stories such as advertising saga Mad Men, which has taken the drama series Emmy for four consecutive years, and two-time Best Comedy winner Modern Family. But there's also some fresh blood that may just steal the show. Among the first-time nominees proving hot favourites for an upset are Homeland and star Claire Danes, New Girl, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus from political satire Veep. The Emmys will be screened on E! from 8am tomorrow.
